Inspired Yogi…What’s your Story?

Jenna Bonfield

How long have you practiced Yoga? How often per week?  I have practiced for about one year casually. In the last few months I have sparked my practice to a daily routine.

What made you decide to practice Yoga?  I love yoga for the stillness it brings to my mind and body. It slows down life and brings me to the present. I am athletic and depend on the physical practice to strengthen and prevent injury. The mental focus helps in every aspect of life and those I love around me.

What do you like about practicing Yoga at National Harbor?  I love being outdoors under the beautiful sky. There’s is nothing like feeling a breeze or the touch of the sun on your skin when practicing.

What is your favorite Yoga pose and why is it your favorite?  Tree, vrksasana, is my latest favorite because it took time to develop.  I love how it strengthens the legs and opens the hips.  Grounding stability feels great to accomplish.

Describe how yoga has enhanced or changed your life:  Yoga brought light back to my life. I regained control of my mind and body. How often are we attune with our breath; which is connected to our mind and entire being? Checking in on yourself let’s you place your energy and focus in a positive way. Ground, grow, light, and love.

How long have you practiced Yoga? How often per week?  It’s been a while since I’ve done yoga. (Years ha!) Life and adulthood just hit me and I lost my sense of time and balance.

image

What made you decide to practice Yoga?  It gave me a sense of peace, balance and quiet time for my mind to rest from the normal monotony of life.

What do you like about practicing Yoga at National Harbor? The scenery is gorgeous and it’s made me feel more centered being in the center of the tri-state area of DC, MD and VA.

What is your favorite Yoga pose and why is it your favorite?  I love Warrior Two pose. It symbolizes my strength and it reminds me of all that I accomplished and the things I’m going to accomplish in my future journey.

Describe how Yoga has enhanced or changed your life?  It reminds me that I have to get back to me.  I need to take care of myself before I can truly take care of anyone else. It has helped me find my inner peace.  It’s grounded me.

It’s a Wrap!  Final YMCA Yoga Session

When I think of the last 10 years of teaching at the YMCA, one word comes to mind: MAGIC! There have been so many magical moments in class for me and hopefully for my students as well! Life is about making connections, sharing, and appreciating and the Y has allowed me to do just that for the last 10 years. I am grateful for all the connections I have made with my students who are not just students but amazing friends! Thank you for allowing me to teach you and don’t waste but a moment on sadness! The energy of sadness doesn’t serve us Yogis…we   know where home is and it has nothing to do with a building, a classroom or a location. I know, without a doubt, that connections will continue to be made and something new and amazing will come out of it!

Check out these beautiful pictures of the final Yoga class…

Inspired Yogi…What’s Your Story?

My Inspired Yogi blog is starting out strong for Summer 2015!  I love to hear the reasons behind my student’s practice.  The depth and the sincerity of those reasons always surprise me!  Letting me know that yoga is so much more than a physical practice.  Here’s our first Inspired Yogi of  Summer 2015:

Beth O’Donnell

How long have you practiced Yoga? How often per week?  I have been practicing yoga for about 10 years. Practicing yoga is a daily discipline for me. It may just be going through a few sun salutations or performing random asanas at home. I enjoy participating in yoga classes the most. The camaraderie, music, guidance and energy enrich my practice.

What made you decide to practice Yoga?  I began taking yoga classes at my local gym as a way to incorporate flexibility training into my strength and cardio workouts. After suffering a few minor back stresses, practicing yoga was a useful tool that aided my recovery and improved my strength and flexibility. As it turns out, restoring my flexibility is only one way that yoga has positively impacted my overall wellness.

Why do you like about practicing Yoga at Fort Washington Park?  Practicing yoga at the Fort, overlooking the Potomac River, is an incredible and peaceful experience that leaves me feeling both rejuvenated and relaxed. The deer and groundhogs are grazing on the edges of the woods. There is always a breeze, sometimes cool and other times warm and sultry. The sunsets over the river are breathtaking and the overall take away is a reminder of how easy it is to find joy in the simple act of just being...being able to move and breath, being part of that beautiful environment (even the pebbles and ticks), being with others who share that joy and being in that present moment. Everyone who comes appreciates Cathy for affording us this wonderful opportunity! Thank you!

What is your favorite Yoga pose and why is it your favorite?  My favorite yoga pose is a hand stand, but I haven't mastered the pose without using a wall for mental confidence and physical support. Practice makes perfect! I also enjoy warrior poses. Virabhadra is the name of a fierce mythical warrior. Warrior III is a pose that challenges my core strength, mental focus and balance all at the same time, all these aspects of the pose are important in strengthening the "fierce warrior" within me.

Describe how Yoga has enhanced or changed your life.  Yoga began as a strictly physical practice to add to my aerobic and strength training program, it has evolved into a discipline that has enriched my spiritual well being as well as increased my strength and endurance. By nature, finding calm and sitting still were challenging acts to endure. Initially, I would sneak out of class as we would transition into shavasana. Learning to embrace the rewards of the calmness of mind and body that comes from personal and group yoga practice has been a great gift. Learning to use breathing to relax and reduce stress is a useful tool in many circumstances. Plus it is just plain FUN! Namaste!

FAREWELL, YOGINI LAURA

Our Yoga kula is saddened … we lost Laura. When death arrives, I always have to remind myself that the strong emotions of sadness and the unfairness I feel are really selfish. If we wallow in our own misery, we turn someone’s death into making it about ourselves and our loss instead of using the gift of memory to honor and keep the spirit of the person who passed living on.

Laura’s physical presence may no longer be among us, but her spirit of helpfulness will reside in me! She loved her Yoga and loved to be around people. She missed very few of my retreats and workshops over the past years and was always a quiet presence in the background offering me help setting up and cleaning up. She was soft spoken but her fighting spirt was loud. She would always be up for a challenge in class, never giving up. I can remember talking with her after many challenging classes and even if she didn’t do as well as she wanted, she had words of acceptance for her limitations which is truly a Yogi’s spirit.

Laura was a stickler for keeping things neat and tidy, including the area where the Yoga props are kept. After learning of Laura’s passing, a student asked me, as she was putting away her yoga blankets and blocks in the closet after class, “Cathy, who will straighten out the Yoga blankets and blocks now that Laura’s gone?” She said it softly and all I could do was smile softly knowing without a doubt that every time I go to straighten out the Yoga props, Laura will be there helping me…

For those of you who knew Laura, I would love to hear how her spirit resides in you.
